Call First, or Show Up and Stand at the Bar

The Oberkampf natural wine bar that runs on a mobile number and a chalkboard mirror. Charcuterie, tartare, and Loire Gamay by the glass.

Yellow formica tables ringed with old wine stains. A mirror behind the bar with the wine list written on it in chalk, updated when someone feels like it. A room the size of a decent Parisian living room, and by 9pm on a Friday it holds twice as many people as it should.

Aux Deux Amis sits on rue Oberkampf, in the 11th, on the strip that has spent the past decade defining what a Paris natural wine bar looks and sounds like. David Vincent-Loyola runs the room; Sokunthear Vong is in the kitchen turning out small plates that read like bistro cooking pushed onto tapas plates. It is not a discovery. It is one of the reference points against which the discoveries get measured.

The reference natural wine bar on Oberkampf, run on a mobile phone and a chalkboard mirror, and the format is the point.

Editorial Deep

The Pour
DRINKS
8.7

The list is written on a mirror in chalk and it changes. What is on it tonight will not be on it next week, so the useful move is to name a grape or a region and let the server take it from there. The prices anchor low for what the room is doing — Loire Gamay from Thierry Puzelat by the glass, a Melon de Bourgogne from La Soeur Cadette by the glass, a bottle of Foillard Morgon. Those are producer names that a natural wine bar in the 3rd or 6th would mark up and call curation.

The Room
ATMOSPHERE
8.3

From the pavement it reads as a small corner café with outside tables and a yellow awning. Nothing about the exterior suggests the wine list waiting inside, which is part of why the neighbourhood keeps it and the tour buses do not. Push through the door and the room reveals itself all at once: yellow formica, wine-stained tabletops, a bar along one wall, a mirror behind it in chalk, and a light level that reads as '60s film set more than 2020s bar design.

The Crowd
VIBE
8.2

The crowd is 11th-arrondissement locals, industry people ending a shift, and a rotating layer of visitors who did the reading. It skews thirties and forties, and the volume climbs with the hour. By 10pm the standing drinkers are pressed against the seated ones, and the service desk near the bar has been converted into a fourth standing table. Nobody minds. If shoulder-to-shoulder French conversation at speaking-over volume is not the evening you want, come at lunch.

The Tab
VALUE
8.8

The room is built around an affordable glass of Puzelat Gamay. It is the price a café on the same street charges for a supermarket wine poured without ceremony, and here it buys a producer that natural wine shops sell by the bottle at a premium. The comparison is not to a cocktail bar and it is not to a Michelin room; it is to the other Oberkampf wine bars, and inside that peer set the tab is meaningfully lower than the reputation would suggest.

The Night
REPEAT
8.4

The room asks nothing of a guest except that they turn up — the wine is serious, the food is enough, and nobody is managing the evening for you. Come back for a Tuesday lunch if you want the room quiet and the plates unhurried. Come back on a Friday at 9pm if you want the version that made its name. Do not come back if you need a table booked online, a menu in English, or a room where you can hear the person across from you after 10pm.

Loire Gamay from Thierry Puzelat by the glass, charcuterie, sweetbreads with chive blossoms

“The Oberkampf natural wine reference. Call first, or stand at the bar.”

Go for a Puzelat Gamay and a plate of charcuterie in a room that has spent a decade telling other Paris wine bars how to be one. Skip if you need an online booking, an English menu, or a chair after 10pm on a weekend.
