Walk Into Daroco First, Then Look for the Curtain
The hidden Galerie Vivienne cocktail bar from Nico de Soto runs on walk-ins and a menu that rotates countries every six months. Arrive by 7:30pm or don't bother with the bar seats.
The velvet curtain is at the back of Daroco. Push through it, climb the stairs, and the room opens onto a marbled herringbone bar, almond-green velvet chairs and brass wall lamps that throw more shadow than light. The Galerie Vivienne is on the other side of the windows. Most people on the ground floor eating carbonara have no idea the bar is here.
Nico de Soto opened Danico after a stretch at the Experimental Cocktail Group and a New York detour running Mace. He was named Most Influential Bartender at the Paris Cocktail & Spirits show in 2014 and the bar has since landed at No. 30 on the 2025 World's 50 Best Bars list. The concept is a research trip filed as a menu: every six months the team picks a country, travels, and comes back with a rotation called Danico Xplorer. It is one of the best cocktail rooms in Paris, and it is doing so almost entirely on walk-ins.

The Kota Ternate is the drink to start with. Three rums, fresh pineapple, lemon, coconut water and a black tea reduction with spices — tropical on paper, controlled in the glass, the tea keeping it from sliding sweet. It reads like a competent tiki number and drinks like the work of someone who has been sent to Indonesia to think about it, which is essentially what happened.
The trick is that the room is invisible from the street. Number 6 rue Vivienne is the Daroco entrance, and Daroco is a busy Italian restaurant with no signage suggesting anything else exists at the address. Walk in, past the pizza pass, look for the velvet curtain. Through it, up the stairs, and the bar reveals itself: small, low-lit, the herringbone marble catching what light the brass sconces give up. Galerie Vivienne — the 1823 glass-roofed passage the bar sits inside — frames the windows.
Early evening pulls a Paris-industry crowd — other bartenders come here, which is the compliment that matters — plus opera-goers stopping in before the Palais Garnier, ten minutes' walk north. After 9pm the room shifts to a younger 2nd-arrondissement set that knows what it came for, plus a steady thread of travellers who found it through its No. 30 place on the World's 50 Best Bars in 2025. It is not a scene bar in the Pigalle sense. Nobody is here to be seen; the curtain sees to that.
The equipment and spirits shelf is where the price goes. Service is the wobble: it can be sharp or it can drift, and on a drifting night the bill feels longer than it is.
This is the best pre-dinner cocktail room in the 2nd, and one of the two or three best in Paris for a first drink of the evening. Come at 7:30pm, take the bar, order the Kota Ternate and then the Pour toi Barman, and walk out at 9 before the room fills. That is the version to return for. The version to avoid is the 10pm walk-in on a Friday, standing in the stairwell waiting for a seat that isn't coming — the room is too small to absorb that hour, and no reservation exists to save you from it.
