Punch Room

The Reservation You Book Before You Book Dinner

A wood-panelled room off Berners Street where the menu is punch, the door stays shut to walk-ins, and the silver bowl on the table is the whole point.

The Milk Punch arrives clear as water in a coupe, which is the trick — Hennessy, Havana Club, Somerset cider brandy, green tea, pineapple, spices and milk, clarified until nothing is left but the flavour. It is £21 and it is what the room was built around. Order it first and then decide whether you want to stay for a bowl.

Punch Room sits inside The London EDITION on Berners Street, a side street off Oxford Street that Fitzrovia claims when it suits. The concept is a bar built entirely around punch — one of London's original mixed drinks, back before the cocktail existed as a category — and the concept has since travelled to Shanghai, Tokyo, Rome and five other cities. This is the original. The menu is presented as a book with the recipes written out so you could, in theory, make them at home. You will not.

A bar that closed the door on the walk-in trade and became more itself for it.

The Pour
DRINKS
8.7

The Milk Punch is the drink the room is known for and the one to start with — Hennessy fine de Cognac, Havana Club 3-year rum, Somerset cider brandy, green tea, lemon, pineapple, spices and milk, all clarified into something that looks like water and drinks like a memory of everything that went into it. £21. The house calling card and a fair one.

The Room
ATMOSPHERE
8.4

Dark wood panelling on every wall, low pendant lighting that keeps the tables lit and the ceiling in shadow, and cushioned banquettes arranged around small tables rather than a bar rail. The reference is a 19th-century London private club — leather, brass, the sense that the door behind you closes properly. It is small. Perhaps a dozen tables. That is the point and also the constraint.

The Crowd
VIBE
8.0

Hotel guests, Fitzrovia media, and the small London contingent that treats punch as a serious category rather than a novelty. It skews older and quieter than a Soho cocktail bar — closer to the Connaught's mid-week crowd than to Tayēr on a Friday — and the volume stays at a level where the person opposite you can be heard without leaning in. On a busy Saturday the room fills to its cap and stays there; because there is no standing and no walk-in overflow, it never tips into the crush that ruins most West End bars after ten.

The Tab
VALUE
7.8

Individual punches on the current menu run from £15 for the non-alcoholic Coco Blanc to £25 for the Blue Tie or Sen Punch, with a Milk Punch at £21 and a discretionary 13.5% service charge on top. A shared silver bowl for two is the better order for what the room is selling. Against the Fitzrovia and Marylebone hotel-bar set the pricing sits mid-tier: meaningfully under the palace bars in Mayfair for a comparable pour, above what a good Soho cocktail room would charge for a straight martini.

The Night
REPEAT
8.2

Bring the person you want to talk to. Punch Room is a two-people-and-a-bowl bar, or four at a stretch, and the whole design — the reservation, the corner seat, the shared silver — rewards a slow evening built around conversation rather than a stop between two other places. Come back for an anniversary, a proper catch-up, the night you have something to tell someone. Do not come back for a big group, a pre-dinner quick one, or a night that needs momentum; the room does not do momentum and does not pretend to.

Milk Punch to start; a shared silver bowl for the table

“Book ahead, order a bowl, take the corner seat.”

Punch Room is a hidden back-room bar inside The London EDITION on Berners Street — walk through the hotel lobby, past reception, to a door at the back. It is reservations-only in practice: book by phone (020 7908 7989), email (punchroom.ldn@editionhotels.com), or via OpenTable. The room is small, wood-panelled, and built around a narrow but excellent programme of punches served individually or in shared silver bowls. Go for a slow evening with one person or three; skip it for anything that needs volume or momentum. Ask for the far corner when you book.
