The Bethnal Green cocktail bar that ranked on the World's 50 Best Bars in 2024 and 2025 still takes reservations only by telephone, still changes its menu daily, and still plays old-school hip-hop at a volume that respects the drink.
A stuffed animal head watches over a room lit low enough that the ice looks blue in the glass, and the sound system is playing something from a Tribe Called Quest record loud enough to notice but not loud enough to shout over. The exterior on Cambridge Heath Road looks like a bar you would walk past. The interior is fifty seats and a bartender who wants you to hand over the choice.
Kevin Armstrong opened the room in 2013 after time behind the stick at Trailer Happiness and Milk & Honey London. What he built in Bethnal Green is a neighbourhood cocktail bar that keeps landing on the same lists as the palace rooms in Mayfair. The World's 50 Best put it at #29 in 2024 and #21 in 2025. The Morning Advertiser has named it the UK's number-one cocktail bar three times, most recently in 2025. It sits in the London cocktail conversation with Tayēr, Nightjar and Connaught Bar, and it does so from a room a fraction of their size with none of their systems.

Ask for a Satan's Manhattan. It is the house version of the drink the bar is named for, and the room has been refining it since 2013. East London locals who know what the bar is, plus a steady thread of cocktail travellers who worked out that the drinks are as serious as anything within a mile of Berkeley Square. The crowd skews thirties, tips toward industry on the later end of the week, and never quite becomes a scene the way Tayēr's ground floor does at ten on a Friday. That is the point of a fifty-seat bar in Bethnal Green — the room stays a room. Peak is Friday and Saturday from around 9pm, when walking in without a phone call becomes a queueing exercise. Midweek at 6pm you can sit at the bar and have a proper conversation with whoever is making your drink.
Pricing is worth a caveat: the bar has never published a full list. Whichever end it lands at on your night, the ratio of technique to price is the strongest in this postcode.
This is the best version of what a neighbourhood cocktail bar with an international reputation can be — small enough to feel like yours, serious enough to justify the trip east from anywhere in the city. Come back on a Tuesday at 6pm and sit at the bar; that is the seat and the hour that rewards the room most. The night to skip is Saturday at 10pm without a phone call in the bank, which turns the visit into a wait and takes the intimacy out of the reason to come.
