The Hot Chocolate Is the Order, the Terrace Is the Reason

The hot chocolate is the order, the terrace is the reason, and the reservation link on the venue's own site is the move nobody uses.

A carafe of hot chocolate arrives at the table before the cutlery does. It is not a mug and it is not a drink pulled from a machine — it is Valrhona squares melted into warm milk, poured tableside, and it is the thing the room has been serving since long before the current century started keeping track. Everything else on the menu is optional. This is not.

Les Deux Magots has been on the Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés since 1884, which puts it at 142 years of pouring coffee at people who came to be seen pouring coffee. The two carved wooden figures on the central pillar give the room its name. The scarlet banquettes and Art Deco interior are the ones the mid-century intellectual set drank in, and the terrace facing the church is the other great seat on this crossroads — Flore has the better-known one, this has the better hot chocolate. The reputation for being a tourist trap is not wrong, but it is only half the story — the other half is that the room delivers exactly the Paris the reader came to see, at a price that reflects the address.

The hot chocolate earns the ticket, the terrace justifies the wait, and the by-the-glass wine list justifies nothing.

Editorial Deep

The Pour
DRINKS
7.8

The old-fashioned hot chocolate is the house move and the only order that matters. Whole chocolate squares melted into warm milk, served from a carafe at the table, thick enough to coat the spoon. Every serious guide to the room lands on it, and the room's own site does too. Order it once and understand why the café's reputation survived a century of cheaper competitors opening up and down the boulevard.

The Room
ATMOSPHERE
8.6

The terrace runs the full frontage with the wicker chairs turned outward, so every seat faces the church rather than the table next to it. A few locals hold down the interior banquettes with a book and a coffee that has gone cold. By nine the terrace becomes a quieter version of itself, the church lit up across the square.

The Crowd
VIBE
7.2

The daytime crowd is a tourist crowd, and that is what the room is for now. Couples with guidebooks, groups doing a Left Bank loop, the occasional Parisian who works nearby and stopped resenting the room a decade ago. After 9pm the balance tips back toward locals — a nightcap crowd from the surrounding streets, quieter, less photographed. If the crowd is the reason to visit a bar, this is not that bar. If the crowd is the cost of the address, it is a cost worth paying twice a year for a two-hour terrace sit.

The Tab
VALUE
7.0

The trap here is ordering a meal. Come for the hot chocolate and a coffee, add a pastry, and keep it simple. That is the version of the room that works.

The Night
REPEAT
7.8

Come back on a warm September evening at nine, when the tourist volume has dropped and the church across the square is lit. Order the hot chocolate even though the weather does not require it, take the corner table on the terrace, stay for an hour. That is the version of Les Deux Magots that has kept the room open for 142 years. The version that does not work is the one where a reader treats it as a restaurant, orders the burger, and pays palace-hotel prices for a café kitchen. Skip that version. Keep the other one.

Old-style hot chocolate, served in the carafe that fills two cups

“Go for the hot chocolate on the terrace. Skip the food.”

Les Deux Magots is not a restaurant and it is not a cocktail bar. It is a 142-year-old café on the best terrace in the 6th, and the hot chocolate is one of the two or three best in Paris. Order that, add a coffee, take the corner terrace table facing the church, and the address delivers. The evening version — after 9pm, when the tourist volume drops and the church is lit — is the one worth planning around.
