The Zinc Counter Behind the Terrace
The Montparnasse literary café that keeps its regulars on the inside of the room and its visitors on the boulevard. Sit accordingly.
The zinc counter runs the length of the room, and at four in the afternoon there is always someone at it with a kir in front of them and no particular reason to leave. This is the point of Le Select, and it has been the point since 1923, when it opened as one of the Montparnasse cafés Fitzgerald and Hemingway spent too much money in. The Plégat family ran it for decades. A family from the Laon region bought it a few years ago and changed nothing a visitor would notice, which is the correct decision.
What Le Select sells is the same thing La Rotonde and Le Dôme sell on the same crossroads — a table, a terrace, a waiter in the black vest and white apron, and the right to sit as long as one order allows. The trick is knowing which table to take. The terrace out front is where the boulevard watches itself. The counter inside is where the café happens. Both cost the same. Only one is Le Select.

By ten, the terrace is full, the interior room has picked up a working volume, and the counter has a rotating cast of people who came for one drink and stayed for three.
The counter inside holds a specific Paris that is getting harder to find — retired locals, neighbourhood residents, the occasional writer with a notebook open in front of them. The terrace holds everyone else, which is not a complaint so much as a description; the boulevard has been drawing that crowd since Hemingway was one of them. The two rooms coexist because they never really mix. A reader who wants the postcard should take the terrace and enjoy it. A reader who wants the café should walk past it and take a stool at the zinc.
La Rotonde is fifty metres away and Le Dôme is across the crossroads, and the pricing on the three is close enough that the choice is about which room you want to sit in rather than what the round will cost. The Instagram number is the current one. The kir royal upsell is the one line item to refuse.
Le Select is a café first, a bar second, and best used as an afternoon or an early evening rather than a destination for a full night out. Come at three for the terrace in winter sun, at five for the happy-hour pint at the counter, at seven before dinner somewhere on the Left Bank. Anyone looking for a cocktail programme worth crossing town for should be at Little Red Door or Danico instead; anyone who wants the Montparnasse café tradition, poured by a waiter in a white apron at a zinc counter that has been there a hundred years, has three or four options on this crossroads and this is one of them.
