Book a Piano Night or Don't Bother
The Art Deco bar inside the Lutetia is a Thursday-through-Saturday room.
The frescoes are the first thing that lands — floor to ceiling, wrapping the room, the kind of surface treatment that stops conversation for a beat when you walk in. Jean-Michel Wilmotte had a hand in the interior. The Pleyel baby grand sits waiting for someone to play it, which happens Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and not otherwise.
This is the Mandarin Oriental Lutetia's cocktail bar on Boulevard Raspail, named for Josephine Baker, who was a patron of the hotel. The drinks list is built around her. It sits in the palace-bar tier alongside Bar Hemingway, Les Ambassadeurs and Bar 228 — and like all of them, the room is doing more of the work than the pour.
The frescoes are the ticket and the piano is the show, which makes a Tuesday visit palace-bar prices for half the reason.

The H. Theoria trio (L'Hystérie, La Perfidie, La Procrastination) is the more interesting corner of the list. The aftershow pours — Lillet Grande Réserve, Carpano Antica Formula, Cocchi di Torino — are the honest move if you're here to nurse one thing and watch the room.
You come in through the Lutetia's Boulevard Raspail entrance, past the concierge desk and through the lobby, and the bar reveals itself at the back — the frescoes don't announce themselves from the street, which is part of the point. This is a room you have to be inside to understand.
Thursday through Saturday, the crowd is hotel guests, dressed-up locals on a birthday or an anniversary, and a scattering of Left Bank regulars who treat the Lutetia as their bar. The piano pulls the room together — people order more, stay longer, talk over the music at the right volume. Weeknights without the piano, the crowd thins to a handful of hotel residents and the room reads much larger than the energy inside it. Come on a Tuesday and you may be one of three tables. Come on a Friday and the room is doing what it was built to do.
What's harder to defend is the escalation. The small plates are the leak. Order two cocktails and stop, and you've paid for the room without letting the menu run away from you.
This is a special-occasion room, not a regular one. Book a table for a Thursday, Friday or Saturday piano sitting, dress the part, order a signature cocktail and an aftershow pour, and leave after two rounds — that's the version of Bar Joséphine that earns the price. Skip it on a weeknight, skip it if you want a bar to sit at for three hours, and skip it if the idea of being told what not to wear irritates you. It is not a nightcap bar and it is not a casual drop-in. It is a room you build the evening around, on the three nights of the week when the room is fully switched on.

Bar Joséphine is a palace-bar room that only fully switches on Thursday through Saturday, when the Pleyel baby grand is played and the crowd fills the scale of the frescoes.
