Ring the Doorbell Before You Try to Book

The horror-tiki bar on 2nd Avenue that made North America's extended 50 Best list (51–100) in 2025 doesn't take reservations for small parties. Here's how it works.

A werewolf howl comes out of a smoking bowl on a table three feet away, and nobody looks up. That's the baseline here: a Bottomless Pit hits the room with lightning flashes and dry-ice fog every ten minutes, and the regulars are too deep in their rum to acknowledge it. The bar opened on 2nd Avenue with a subversion in mind — tiki minus the tikis, no hula imagery, no faux-Polynesian pastiche, just a horror-punk read on tropical drinking. Alligator hide on the walls. Taxidermy in the corners. Palm fronds where you'd expect them and demon-faced mugs where you wouldn't.

North America's 50 Best put it at #95 in 2025. The critical write-ups have been consistent. It's the East Village bar you've been told about by a bartender friend, and the one that will make you stand on 2nd Avenue ringing a doorbell for twenty-five minutes before you get in.

The rare theme bar where the drinks are strong enough that you'd still be here if they turned the smoke machines off.

The Pour
DRINKS
8.6

The Bottomless Pit is the room's calling card — it arrives smoking, howling, and flashing, and it is also a genuinely competent tiki drink underneath the theatre. But the one to order first is the Chaos Magick, which does the harder job of being interesting without needing a light show to sell it. Complex, punchy, generously portioned. Order popcorn with it.

The Room
ATMOSPHERE
8.5

You start on 2nd Avenue, in front of an unmarked door, ringing a doorbell. Nothing about the exterior tells you what's inside, which is deliberate — the reveal is the point. Someone buzzes you in, takes your name, and either seats you or points you back onto the sidewalk with a wait time.

The Crowd
VIBE
8.2

Downtown thirty-somethings who know what they're drinking, industry people on their night off, and a steady rotation of couples who read about the place somewhere and came to see if it held up. Strictly 21+, which the door enforces. The energy peaks around 10pm on a weekend — loud enough that you're leaning across the table to talk, not so loud that the room stops working as a bar. The crowd is here for the drinks first and the theme second, which is the right ratio and the reason the room doesn't tip into gimmick.

The Tab
VALUE
7.6

The dumplings are the better order of the two snacks; the food is not what you're here for and the kitchen knows it. The cocktails are expensive for tiki and defensible for the size and technique; the food is priced fairly and executed at just-fine.

The Night
REPEAT
8.3

This is the best horror-tiki bar in New York because it is essentially the only one operating at this level, and it holds up against the city's serious cocktail rooms on the drinks alone. Come back on a Wednesday around 8pm — the room is full but not fighting, the bartenders have time to talk about the rum list, and the Chaos Magick tastes better when you're not shouting over the next table. Don't come back on a Friday at 11pm with a group of six expecting to walk straight in; the doorbell system was not designed for your convenience. Skip it entirely if theatrical drinks read as gimmick to you — the smoke and the howls are load-bearing here, and pretending otherwise misses the room.

Chaos Magick, Bottomless Pit for the table moment, Ti' punch, Damned Dumplings

“The horror-tiki room that earns its theatre because the drinks would hold up without it.”

Go for the Chaos Magick, the rum list, and one properly executed piece of tabletop theatre from the Bottomless Pit. Walk in for a party of four or fewer and ring the doorbell — reservations are Resy only, and only for parties of 5-8. Expect 20-25 minutes standing at the front even with a booking on a busy night. Both are load-bearing here.
