The address is 84 Quai de Jemmapes and the door is not on the quai. Walk past the frontage a dozen times and you will keep walking past it — the bar sits at the back of a courtyard, through an archway that reads as a residential entrance until you're standing inside it. Once you're through, the 10th arrondissement disappears and you are in an 800-square-metre room dressed as a Congolese curiosity shop crossed with a Belle Époque greenhouse. Plants everywhere. Velvet armchairs in various stages of dignified collapse. String lanterns overhead. A bar programme that treats rum the way a Marais wine bar treats Jura whites.
What Le Comptoir Général is trying to be is legible within a minute of arriving: a room that shifts across the day from family brunch to late-night dance floor, anchored by rum, priced for the canal crowd rather than the palace crowd. It sits on plenty of Paris bar lists and it did not make the World's 50 Best in 2025. Both of those facts are correct and neither of them tells you whether to come. The courtyard does.

At six in the evening on a weekday the room reads as a botanical garden that happens to serve drinks — families finishing late lunches on the terrace, the lanterns not yet doing any real work, the volume low enough to hear the plants. By ten on a Friday it is a different bar entirely: the armchairs are pushed back, the music is up, the terrace is full and the interior rooms have people moving between them the way people move at a party rather than a bar.
The crowd is Canal Saint-Martin doing what Canal Saint-Martin does: young Parisians in the 10th and 11th who treat the canal as a living room, tourists who found the door on purpose rather than by accident, and a scattering of people who came for brunch and stayed for the afternoon. It is not a scene bar. Nobody is looking at the door. The energy climbs from conversational to dance-floor across the evening without ever tipping into the aggressive volume of the Oberkampf strip a Métro ride south.
The rum cocktails are where the money should go.
A rum bar on the canal is a specific and defensible thing to be, and this one has committed to it for fifteen years. Come back on a Thursday around nine, order whatever the bartender is currently infusing, and stay until the room turns over into its late shape. The occasion is a long evening with three or four people who are happy to drink rum and eat ceviche for four hours. It is not the occasion for a first date that needs quiet, and it is not the occasion for anyone who has decided in advance that they don't like a room dressed to a theme.
