The Speakeasy Behind a Working Laundromat in the 10th

A cocktail bar hidden behind a functioning washing machine near République, with swings for seats and a walk-in-only door policy that punishes anyone who arrives after nine.

The washing machines at 30 Rue René Boulanger are real. People do their laundry there. The gag is well-executed enough that first-timers spend a minute looking for the button before someone in line points at it.

Lavomatic sits a short walk from République in the 10th, in the density of bars that has built up around Canal Saint-Martin and the rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis over the past decade. It is not trying to be Little Red Door or Danico — the cocktail programme is not built to be scored against the Combat and Candelaria tier. It is trying to be a fun room with a strong drinks list and a door that makes the evening feel earned. On that brief, it works.

A concept bar where the concept survives the first round, and the drinks are the reason the second one gets ordered.

Editorial Deep

The Pour
DRINKS
8.0

The menu covers modern cocktails with house-made syrups and infusions, seasonal fruit, and a natural wine list that runs deeper than the concept suggests. Belgian beer is on if the group has a holdout.

The Room
ATMOSPHERE
8.2

Swings hang from the ceiling as seating, cushions are stacked in colours that would read as too much anywhere with better lighting, and the ceiling is low enough that a tall drinker will notice. The room is small — small enough that a group of six changes its temperature — and the design commits to the bit rather than apologising for it. Lighting is warm and dim, which does the double work of flattering the swings and softening the noise from a full house.

The Crowd
VIBE
7.8

A mixed room by age and by nationality — 10th-arrondissement locals in their late twenties and thirties, a steady thread of visitors who read about the washing machine somewhere and had to see it, and a scatter of after-work groups who moved on from a République café. The energy is warm rather than scene-y; nobody is here to be seen and the swings would undercut it if they tried. On a busy Saturday the room gets loud enough that a conversation across a four-top requires leaning in, which is the trade-off for the buzz that makes the place work in the first place.

The Tab
VALUE
7.6

The trap is the queue. Fair money for the room and the technique — not cheap, not palace-bar pricing, correctly in the middle.

The Night
REPEAT
7.8

Come back on a first date in October when the seasonal menu turns over and the syrups shift with it. The room is built for a two-person conversation on a swing with a cocktail neither of you has had before, and the concept gives the evening a story without either of you having to work for it. The night that does not work here is the group of six on a Saturday at eleven — the room is too small, the queue too long, and the swings too few to hold the plan together.

Cherie Cherry cocktail

“A speakeasy where the gimmick clears the door and the drinks carry the rest of the night.”

Go early on a weeknight or before 7pm on a weekend, order the Cherie Cherry, and take a swing near the back. Skip it if the plan involves a group of six or a Saturday after ten — the room is too small and the queue too long to survive either.
