Book Lunch, Not Dinner, and Do It Now

The tuna tostadas and the half-red, half-green whole fish have earned their reputation. The lunch service is the one to book.

The whole grilled fish arrives split down the middle — one side flushed red with adobo, the other green with parsley and chile. It has been the visual signature of this dining room since 1998, and it is still the plate everyone in the room is either eating or watching arrive at the next table. Around it: tuna tostadas stacked with fish, avocado and a slick of chipotle mayo, and shrimp that come out of the kitchen fast enough to keep the noise up.

Contramar opened in Roma Norte in 1998 and has been booked out ever since. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand in 2025, which is roughly the right shorthand: this is not a tasting-menu restaurant reaching for stars, it is a Mexican seafood room that has spent nearly three decades getting the same twenty dishes right and refusing to change them.

The tuna tostadas earn every peso of their reputation, and the room at lunch does something a dinner service cannot replicate.

Editorial Deep

The Plate
FOOD
Good

The prices sit higher than the cooking asks for. The shrimp are competent rather than memorable. A serious eater working through Mexico City's seafood rooms will find better-executed ceviches elsewhere for less money.

The Room
ATMOSPHERE
Excellent

Durango 200 gives you almost nothing from the pavement — a corner frontage in Roma Norte that reads as residential until you are through the door. Inside, the room opens out further than the exterior suggests: a sprawling dining room with tables close enough to hear the next conversation, high ceilings that let the noise rise, and light coming in from windows on two sides during the day.

The Table
SERVICE
Very good

The service rewards the diner who arrives on time with a reservation and knows what they want to order. Waiters are quick, informed on the fish that came in that morning, and unfussy about turning tables — which the room needs to do to seat everyone holding a booking. The system does not reward the walk-in, the group of eight that did not email ahead, or the party that shows up ten minutes late expecting the table to still be there.

The Bill
VALUE
Ordinary

Two of them are enough for two people to share as a starter, the fish is properly fresh, the tostada holds its structure, and the chipotle mayo does not smother what is underneath. That is a fair price for what arrives — you would pay similar for a lesser version at a hotel restaurant in Polanco and leave less satisfied.

The Return
REPEAT
Very good

First visit: the tuna tostadas, the whole fish half red and half green, a Mezcalita to start and a Carajillo to close. Second visit: the tostadas again — non-negotiable — but skip the octopus and the shrimp in favour of a second order of the fish for the table, or the ceviche the regulars order over the shrimp dishes. The menu rewards knowing what to order and what to leave alone, and a second visit is where that knowledge earns its return.

What to eat

Don't miss.

Tuna tostadas; whole grilled fish half red, half green; Carajillo to close

“The tostadas and the whole fish earn the reputation; the rest of the menu does not always keep up.”

Book lunch, not dinner — the room at midday is what the reviews are actually praising. For a quieter Mexican seafood meal in Roma Norte at a lower bill, Entremar (the sister restaurant in Polanco) does the same fish in a calmer room. Come to Contramar for the room and the tostadas; come to it knowing what to skip.
