A £28 Three-Course Set Lunch That Reads Like a Wine Merchant Wrote It
The Bloomsbury original has a walk-in wine bar out front and a proper dining room behind it. The set lunch is the way in.
A magazine about wine opened a restaurant, then opened another one, and the first one is still the one to visit. That is the shape of Noble Rot on Lamb's Conduit Street — a narrow Bloomsbury shopfront with a wine bar you can walk into and a dining room behind it that you have to book. Dan Keeling, who co-founded the whole enterprise and wrote a book called Who's Afraid of Romanée-Conti?, is the reason the list reads the way it does. Everything else follows from that.
The Soho and Mayfair branches have their arguments, but neither has the front bar. That is the piece worth crossing town for.
The wine list is priced like the people writing it want you to drink from it.

The comté tart arrives before you have finished the first glass — a thin, deeply browned disc, the cheese doing most of the talking, pastry that snaps rather than flakes. It is the kind of opener that tells you the kitchen has a French shelf next to a modern British one and knows when to reach for it. The slip sole, when it is on, is straightforward in the good way: whole fish, butter, a squeeze of lemon, and enough restraint to leave it alone.
You can hear the person opposite you at a normal volume, which in central London on a Friday night is already a recommendation. The front wine bar hums; the rear dining room is quieter, wood-heavy, low-lit, closer to a merchant's back office than a restaurant. Small tables, close together, and enough hard surfaces that a full room lifts to a warm murmur rather than a roar.
The booking page presents this as a straightforward SevenRooms reservation, which it is, and then omits the thing that matters: there are two ways in. The dining room takes bookings via SevenRooms and requires them for a full meal. The front wine bar takes no reservations at all, serves bar snacks alongside the list, and is the only way to experience Noble Rot without committing to a sitting. Choose your entry before you arrive. If you want dinner, book. If you want a glass of something clever and a plate of whatever the bar is offering, walk in and stand at the counter.
The set lunch is the answer to the question of whether this place is worth recommending on price. Two courses at £24, three at £28, Monday to Saturday, with a menu that changes daily and a wine list you would otherwise pay a Mayfair markup to drink from — that is a genuinely underpriced offering for what arrives. Order one glass by the glass and lunch still lands well under what the obvious peer wine bars in W1 would charge.
The condition that is currently unmet is a free weekday between one and three. That is when this room is at its best and its most defensible — the set lunch on the table, the front bar humming without pressure, the wine list open long enough to read properly. Weeknight dinner works too, but the maths tightens and the case shifts from value to occasion.
